Nowhere Art Space by teamLab

World-renowned international digital art collective teamLab is scheduled to launch a permanent exhibition in Utrecht, the Netherlands in 2024. As Europe’s first digital art centre, called ‘Nowhere’, it is dedicated to the collective’s popular immersive digital art, as well as other digital projects.

About teamLab

Tokyo-based art collective teamLab (f.2001) is renowned for its multi-sensory exhibitions. The exhibitions are usually focused on interactive digital art, such as light, sound, digital sequences and immersive experiences to trigger an awe-inspiring sensory explosion that blurs the boundaries between art, science, technology, and the natural world.

Their first museum in Tokyo, Japan—an expansive 10,000 m² space called teamLab Borderless—is known as the world’s first digital art museum. Since the venue opened its doors in 2018, it has quickly gained in popularity and taken the Guinness World Record for the world’s most visited museum featuring art by a single group/person with a record-breaking 2,198,284 visitors in 2019. This record beat the next most popular in this category, the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands (2,134,778 visitors).

After the successful opening of their first museum in Tokyo, the award-winning art collective began expanding their venues all over the world, from Shanghai to San Francisco to name a few.

About Nowhere

Nowhere is expected to be teamLab’s first permanent base in Europe dedicated to their immersive digital art. It will host a new type of multisensory and interactive digital art exhibition that is purpose-built with state-of-the-art technologies, providing an experience where visitors to lose themselves and interact with art pieces while exploring an awe-inspiring, ever-changing, and immersive art world.

The space will host a selection of works from teamLab’s collective, as well as ‘Future Park’ and ‘Athletic Forest’. ‘Future Park’ will house an educational project for collaborative creation, where visitors can enjoy creating a world together with other visitors. ‘Athletic Forest’ will be a creative athletic space that helps train spatial awareness by understanding the world through the body and how it relates to the three-dimensionality of the world.

Nowhere’s new 3,000 m² digital art space is scheduled to open as part of Utrecht’s new green urban development project ‘Wonderwoods’ in early 2024.

About Wonderwoods 

Wonderwoods is an ongoing new development project in the heart of Utrecht which welcomes Nowhere Art Space as one of the major tenants of the project.

The project consists of two skyscrapers based on the idea of the relationship between nature and technology. The green buildings or so-called ‘vertical forest’ will be filled with more than 360 trees and nearly 10,000 shrubs and plants to encourage a healthy balanced urban lifestyle.

Wonderwoods is currently under construction and will open at the doorstep of Utrecht Central Station in 2023.
