Our favourite Japanese chef, Taka’s online cooking class will be back in September. In each class, Taka shares three tasty Japanese food recipes and guides you through the process of preparing a delicious meal at home.

Vegetable Kakiage Onigirazu (Mixed vegetable tempura rice sandwich)

Also known as “Rice Sandwich”, Onigirazu is an evolved version of onigiri. It is usually with a square shape, made of layers of rice and delicious filling, wrapped with nori seaweed.

The filling we feature this time―Kakiage is a type of tempura made with a variety of vegetable strips, sometimes with seafood. Tired of having plain onigiri? Then give this onigirazu a try!

Gobo French Fries

Gobo (burdock root) is an edible root vegetable that is very popular in Japan. It is known to have many health-promoting properties such as antioxidants. Gobo French Fries are the best way to fully enjoy the root’s unique crunchy texture.

Yuzu Soda

Yuzu is a bright yellow round citrus fruit grown in cool, mountainous regions of Japan. It is known to have a distinctive flavour which is close to a lemon crossed with a mandarin orange. This cold drink―Yuzu Soda is a perfect refreshment in the summertime.

Preparation before the class

In order to participate, you need to prepare all listed ingredients in the recipes on your own. In addition, the following preparation is required prior to the lesson:

 

  • Refrigerate the egg
  • Refrigerate water for the tempura batter
  • Prepare ice cubes
  • Peel the onion and the carrot
  • Cook a cup of Japanese rice
  • Wash the gobo well to remove soil (a ball of aluminium foil works well to remove the soil from the root)
